Iris Kuwaye

Insurance Agent

Class of 1983

By Melfred Tellio

Iris Kuwaye runs a local State Farm Insurance Agency in Hilo, which has six employees.  She has been in the insurance business for seven years.  She chose her career while she was playing golf after the previous agency’s owner, Tatsumi Motobu, offered her the opportunity to be his assistant.   During high school she thought she was going to run the family business instead of becoming an Insurance agent.

The best thing about her job is the gratification of helping people manage the risks of everyday life, recover from the unexpected, and realizing their dreams.  As an insurance agent, Iris helps people lay a foundation for approaching their dreams and goals by first helping them to identify, prioritize and address their needs.  “My role is to serve as a competent source of insurance and financial information and guidance,” she says.    Iris is licensed and authorized to sell auto, fire, life and annuities, disability and long term care insurance.  She also can assist customers with retirement programs, State Farm mutual funds and State Farm bank products.

To prepare for her career, Iris sought the advice of her counselor, Mrs. Dorothy Liu.  As a 1983 graduate of Waiäkea High School, she remembers being with her friends and being a member of a service club called J-Teens.   She majored in Business Administration at Oregon State University.
