Waiäkea High School Class of 1993’s Mr. Senior, Desmond Yogi, is now a firefighter at the Honolulu International Airport.  His main job is aircraft rescue and fire fighting.  However, he doesn’t just wait around until an airplane crashes to go to work.  They also respond to medical emergencies, building fires in and around the airport, hazardous material emergencies and carry out daily station duties.  He is also a nationally certified emergency medical technician, and has been in situations where a life has been saved.  He mentioned that he has been in roughly seven emergencies where the patient’s heart has stopped or coded, and he and his teammates were able to get a heartbeat back on three of them.  Saving a child has had the deepest impact on him.  He said, “Kids usually have very strong hearts, it is when they have something wrong from birth that you may go to a code that is medical, not trauma, in nature.”

While at Waiäkea, Desmond was co-captain of the football team and named defensive player of the year in 1993.  He was also a member of the Senior prom court.  He has A.A. degrees from both the University of Maryland and the Community College of the Air Force and earned a B.S. from UH Manoa in Kinesiology and Leisure Science.  He served in the Air Force from 1995 to 2003, where he learned fire fighting skills.  He was based in Italy, Korea, Japan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Okinawa, Germany, the United Kingdom, Spain and France.  Desmond is currently a lieutenant in the Air Force Reserves and is also a beach and pool attendant at the Sheraton Princess Kaiulani Hotel.
