GENERAL

SCHOLARSHIPS FOR SENIORS

Hawaii Community Foundation Scholarships are available on-line at www.hawaiicommunityfoundation.org.  Application deadline is March 2, 2009.    - T. Kawada

SCHOLARSHIPS

HUI OKINAWA  -  whose primary purpose is to promote, preserve and perpetuate the Okinawan culture, is offering two $1,000 scholarships to qualifying students.  Applicant must have some involvement w/ Okinawan culture. Deadline :  April 18, 2009.

JACK & OTOME MIYASHIRO SCHOLARSHIP  -  is offering a $2,000 scholarship to qualifying graduating seniors who will be attending a 2 - 4 yr.college. Must have involvement w/ the Okinawan culture. Deadline :  April 18, 2009.  For more infor./application, come to GRAC. - N. Okinaka

SENIOR BABY PICTURES/EXTRA PHOTOS AND ADS

Please come by D-201 all week (February 17-20, 2009) during lunch recess to pick up these items.  Photos and ads not picked up will be discarded.  As a reminder, you are only allowed to pick up your own photos. - K. Castillo

SR. PROM PERMISSION FORM CORRECTION:

There is a correction to the Sr. Prom permission form.  All guests must be 20 years or younger, not 21 yrs. as printed on the front page of the form.  All guests to Waiakea High School's Senior Prom and Junior Ball must be 20 years or younger.  Only one guest per person.  The committee and advisors will be checking the copies of the guest ids when purchasing bids. - D. 2009 YEARBOOK ORDERS

From Wednesday, February 25, 2009- Friday, February 27, 2009, you can place an order for a 2009 WHS Yearbook.  This will be your last chance to order a standard yearbook.  Yearbooks are $50.00 and you can pay with either a check written to WHS or cash.  Yearbooks are being sold during lunch recess only in D-201.  If you are unsure of whether or not you purchased a yearbook, come by D-201during recess time only and check if your name is listed on the door.   - K. HAWAII DISTRICT SCIENCE FAIR:

Nolan Kamitaki (g11) and Kelson Lau (g12) are International Science Fair bound to Reno NV after winning First and Second Place respectively at the 2009 Hawaii District Science Fair this past weekend.  Kelson teamed with Megan Kurohara from Hilo High school so it was actually an inter-school project.  Mark Seu (g9) placed third overall.  All participants, including Frank Chi, and Leland Lopez will compete at the 52nd Hawaii State and Science Engineering Fair on Oahu in April.  Science Fair projects are on display at 'Imiloa Astronomy Center till Feb. 27.  No admission fee for viewing science fair projects.  - J. SHOP FOR HIGHER EDUCATION;

Each time you shop with your Maika'i Card at any Foodland or Sack N Save, you'll earn points for you and our school.  The more points we earn, the more scholarships we receive.  Help our school earn scholarships by visiting any Foodland or Sack N Save from now until March 24.    - D. Tanabe

HAWAII-OKINAWA STUDENT EXCHANGE PROGRAM:

Interested in traveling to Okinawa?  A maximum of 25 students STATEWIDE will be selected to participate in home-stay in Okinawa scheduled for June 12-27, 2009.  Students are responsible for their airfare of approximately $1,300, plus cost of a U.S. passport, three meetings on Oahu, and any personal incidentals.  All accommodations, meals, and ground transportation in Okinawa will be provided by the Okinawan government and/or host family.  If interested see Mrs. Tanabe in E-103 for an application.  Questions may also be directed to sophomore Eric Hatada who participated in this program last year.    Deadline:  March 6, 2009. - D. JUNIOR COUNTRY FAIR COLLECTION

Cleaning out your home and closets?   Don't know what to do with your stuff?  The class of 2010 is currently taking donations of gently used items for our Junior Country Fair!!!  Drop-off/collection date:  this  Sunday, February 22 from 11 am - 2 pm at the WHS ramp. - P. Yanagisawa - P. Yanagisawa

INTERACT CONVENTION & MAHALO FOR HEARTWALK SERVICE

All Interact members interested in attending Convention March 20, 21, 22 please submit name to Mrs Clemmer, Mrs Sumida, or Ala Matsumoto by this Thursday.

Are you interested in serving your class and school?  Nomination packets for SGA & class officers will be available on Friday, February 20th, in E-103.   - D. Tanabe

SENIOR SCHOLARSHIPS

PUERTO RICAN HERITAGE SOCIETY OF HAWAII  -  Amt. - $500. GPA of 3.5 or higher. Financial need. Personal interview may be required of finalists. Deadline: April 1, 2009.

HI ISLAND UNITED HONGWANJI BUDDHIST WOMEN'S ASSOC.  -   Amt. - $750. Any accredited college, university, or commercial college is acceptable. Applicant must be involved in Dharma School, Jr. YBA,& other Hongwanji related organizations.  Deadline: April 15, 2009.

HILO BUDDHIST FRIENDSHIP SOCIETY  -   Amt. $750. Applicant and/or parent/guardian must be a member of good standing of the Honpa Hongwanji . Applicant must have participated in church-related activities. Deadline:  April 17, 2009.  For more infor./application on any of these applications, come to GRAC. - N. Okinaka

Job Sharing Program 2009 - 2010 School Year.  Deadline for Job Sharing Program application is March 15, 2009.

Imiloa Astronomy Center hosts a family fun-filled night at the Festival of Science on Thursday, March 12, from 5 to 7 pm at the imiloa Astronomy Center.  The festival is free of charge for anyone interested. - M. Respicio
