GENERAL

JOURNEY THROUGH THE UNIVERSE

This week is Journey Through the Universe Week.  There will be activities for children and adults at Borders TONIGHT from 5 PM - 7 PM (no ticket required). - L. Martin

SENIOR RING ORDERS

Senior rings will be distributed on WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 11th during morning recess in GRAC.  Seniors who ordered rings should bring the balance due on that day.  Questions?  See Mrs. Sakai-Kawada in GRAC. - T. Kawada

AP TESTING FEE

Students in AP classes !  Starting February 17th (Tuesday) thru Feb. 27th,  AP testing fee's will be collected in GRAC (port. 12).

Cost for the exam for this school year only - $33.00. That's right ! This is the students portion ! Come by at 1st recess, lunch recess and afterschool. Do Not Send Students During Class Time ! Checks can be made out to Waiakea High School. Also - If you are planning to take more than 1 - test, you do not need to make separate checks, Please Put the Total, & Pay With One Check Only.  Any questions or concerns, come to GRAC or see Mr. Richards. - N. WHS NEWSPAPER VALENTINE'S DAY SHOUT-OUTS!

Have a secret crush and can't tell them in person? Whether you're shouting out to your sweetheart or pet iguana, share your feelings with the Ka Leo O Ke Koa Valantine's edition! Our journalistic cupids will be stationed outside Tanabe's during lunch recess on 2/5, 2/9 and 2/10. Shoutouts are free: you can't buy love after all!    - A. Kelly

COAST GUARD ACADEMY

 Juniors & Seniors -   Are you physically fit  & adventuresome, enjoy science & math?  How does protecting America's environment and our ports and waterways sound ? Conduct search and rescue missions, stop illegal drugs, immigrants, and other threats to our borders. If you answered YES to any of these questions - the Coast Guard Academy might be for you.  Come and listen to a Coast Guard Academy representative on Wednesday, January 11th @ 8:30am. in GRAC. Sign up for a pass in GRAC if interested. - N. Okinaka

SENIOR SCHOLARSHIPS

HAWAII EDUCATION ASSOCIATION EDUCATORS SCHOLARSHIP  (HEA)  -   is offering two scholarships of $1,000 each to educators who are members of HEA in good standing and have been members for at least one year, and have Baccalaureate degree.  Deadline:  April 1, 2009.

HEA SCHOLARSHIP   -  is offering five scholarships of $1,000 each to deserving high school seniors who are HEA members,or children or grandchildren of HEA members.  Deadline : April 1, 2009.

THE BIG ISLAND PRESS CLUB  -  is offering various scholarships in the amt. of $500 - $1,500.00. Applicant must express an interest in a career in journalism or a related field.  Deadline :  June 10, 2009.

MERRIMAN'S CULINARY SCHOLARSHIP  -  Applicant must have an interest and who plans to become a full-time student in the Food Service program at either the Hilo campus, or the University of Hawaii Center at West Hawaii. Amt. -  $1,050.00.  Deadline:  March 31, 2009.

KAMEHAMEHA - COLLEGE  SCHOLARSHIP   

NA   HO'OKAMA  A  PAUAHI  -  A need based scholarship available to students enrolled in associate's, bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree programs. Deadline :  April 20, 2009.  If interested in any of these scholarships or for more infor. come to GRAC.  - N. Okinaka

PRACTICE FRENCH AND SPANISH

There is a new feature on the library's Destiny catalog.  By clicking on the last two items on the left column of the catalog, you can search for materials in either French or Spanish!  This is a great way to practice the languages!  Go to the school's website at: http://waiakeahigh.k12.hi.us.  Click on Destiny Library catalog; select the "Catalog" tab, then look for either Spanish or French, and you're ready to practice.  Book titles will still appear in English.  Select the English tab to get back to the usual catalog.  Ask the librarians for help if it's needed. - G. The Hawaii Education Association (HEA) is offering two scholarships of $1,000 each to educators who are members of the HEA in good standing and have been members for at least one year.  These scholarships are intended to assist members who plan to continue their education in 2009-2010 - M.
