GENERAL

MANDATORY DRIVER ED. MEETING FOR JANUARY CLASS SESSION

There will be a mandatory student/parent meeting for students enrolled in the January Session Driver Ed. class. The meeting will be held at the school library on January 22, Thursday, at 6:30pm. Student and at least 1 parent must attend this meeting in order to be in the class. - yamauchi

VARIETY SHOW 2009 - "AN ELEMENTAL ADVENTURE"

Variety Show tickets are now on sale through grade level advisors, committee members, performers and in E-103.  Cost is $5 presale, $7 at the door.  Come and support your classmates on Sunday, Feb. 8, 6:00 p.m. in the WHS gym.   - D. Tanabe

FINANCIAL AID NIGHT

The Pacific Financial Aid Association will be holding a Financial Aid Night on Thursday, January 22nd at 6:30 p.m. in the Cafeteria.  Jeff Scoffield from the UH-Hilo Financial Aid office and Frank Green from the Travel Institute of the Pacific will be available to answer questions regarding the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).    Other students and parents are also welcomed.  - T. VALENTINE'S DAY:

There was an error in the pricing of the Valentine's Day roses.  Cost is $3 per rose.  Pre-sale orders will be taken in front of E-103 from Jan. 20-23 during lunch recess.  Balloons will also be sold for $3 on a first come, first serve basis on Feb. 13. - D. Tanabe

PENNIES FOR PATIENTS:

Please make a change in someone's life by donating your spare change (or bills) into the Pennies for Patients cardboard boxes that SGA, class officers and various chairpersons will be keeping for this week.  The money collected will be helping our statewide Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.  All boxes must be returned to E-103 during lunch recess next Tuesday, Jan. 27.  This is a class competition so please give generously.   - D. SENIOR SCHOLARSHIPS

THE EDWIN M. KUNIYUKI MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP  -   Amt: $1,000.00. Deadline February 28, 2009. Applicant must be a member of the Hawaii Schools Federal Credit Union. New acct. opening balance requirement is just $25 and can be opened at either the two branches; in Downtown Honolulu, or at the Town Center of Mililani near the theaters. VOLCANO COMMUNITY FOUNDATION  -  has announced it's continuation of its scholarship program. Applicant must maintain their primary residence in Volcano. (fr. Akatsuka Orchids (Kahauala Rd.) thru the Volcano Golf Course subdivision).Amt. - $500.  Deadline: March 1, 2009.

ASSOCIATED CHINESE UNIVERSITY WOMEN, INC.  -  Applicants of Chinese or part Chinese ancestry may apply.  Amt. - $2,000.

Deadline: March 11, 2009. Min. of  3.5  G.P.A. Personal interivew may be requested.

ROBERT C. BYRD HONORS SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM  -  is a federally-funded program to promote student excellence & achievement & to recognize exceptionally able students. G.P.A.  3.5 and  above.  SAT combined score 1875 on verbal & math, and/or a composite ACT score of 30. Amt. -  $1,500. Deadline:  March 13, 2009.

BIG ISLAND FEDERAL CREDIT UNION  -   Applicant must be a member in good standing of the Big Island Federal Credit Union. Amt. -  total of seven (7) awards -   2 - at $2500 each & 5 - at $1000. Dealine: March 13, 2009.

FILIPINO CHAMBER OF COMMERCE OF HAWAII FOUNDATION  -  Applicant must have cummulative G.P.A. of 3.5. Six scholarships will be awarded worth at least $3,000.00.  Deadline:  March 31, 2009. You may also download them at www.filipinochamber.org/foundation.   

AFCEA HAWAII  SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE  -  is announcing their annual Scholarship Program. Two scholarship will be awarded this yr.:  Merit-Based Scholarship - @ $2,000.  LTG Thomas Rienzi Scholarship - @  $3,000.  Student must be attending a college or University in the State of HI. studying a hard science or technical field.   Deadline: May 8, 2009.  If interested in or for more infor./ application in any of these scholarships, come to GRAC. SENIOR SCHOLARSHIPS

HAWAII ASSOCIATION FOR HEALTH, PHYSICAL EDUCATION, RECREATION & DANCE  -  (HAHPERD)  is offering scholarships in the amt. of two -  $750  to high school students &  two - $1250 for college/university students who are planning to major in the field of teaching Physical Ed. Heath, Dance or Recreational Leadership. Deadline:  February 16, 2009.

HILO WOMEN'S CLUB  -  Deadline:  April 15, 2009. Proven financial need w/ a FAFSA.  G.P.A. 2. 5 or higher required. Applicant must be entering UH-Hilo, or Hawaii Comm. College.   Amt. - $1,000.00.

Cleaning out your home and closets?   Don't know what to do with your stuff?  The class of 2010 is currently taking donations of gently used items for our Junior Country Fair!!!  Drop-off/collection dates:  January 25 and February 22 from 11 am - 2 pm at the WHS ramp. - P. Yanagisawa

ATTENTION ALL NJROTC CADETS

Variety Show practices continue in Mrs. Yanagisawa's office during MORNING recesses on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday of this week.  Lunch practices and after school practices in Mrs. Naungayan's room, R205.  See Mrs. Naungayan if you want to help with props!  She needs you! - S. Naungayan

2008 WAGE AND TAX STATEMENT, FORM W-2

Your 2008 W-2 will be available on Friday, January 30, 2009.   Please see me or Mrs. Abraham.  Employees who have worked in more than one position or have transferred from another state agency will receive only one statement which includes all earnings for the year.  Protect your statement from being lost or misplaced.  The cost for a duplicate is $10.00 and expect a two week wait or more for the replacement.  Payment by personal check will require more time to process because receipt of funds must be verified.  - J.
