GENERAL

HOMECOMING KICK-OFF & CLOSING RALLIES:

Both rallies are closed to the public.  Please do not encourage outsiders to attend as they will be turned away at the door.  The rallies are for current Waiakea HS students, staff, and invited guests. - D. Tanabe

HOMECOMING WEEK 2007:

Tomorrow is the BIG DAY!  Wear school colors or this year's Homecoming t-shirt.  Watch the Male Cheerleaders perform, march in the Homecoming Parade which starts at 3:30 pm at the Sparky Kawamoto Swim Stadium, and cheer on our football boys as they challenge the Hilo HS Vikings.  Participate and display your class and school pride! - D. COLLEGE PRESENTATIONS

OCCIDENTAL COLLEGE - A representative from Occidental College in Los Angeles California will be doing a presentation

in GRAC on Thursday, November 1, 2007 at 8:30am. Occidental College is located 5 mi. from downtown LA. Private 4 yr. college.

HAVERFORD COLLEGE - A representative will be in GRAC on Tuesday, November 6, 2007 at 12:45pm.  Located in Haverford, Pennsylvania. Private 4 yr liberal arts college. Some of the majors include: Architecture, Biology, Physical Science,Visual/performing arts.

PUGET SOUND -  Located in Everett, Washington. 15 mi. from Seattle. Will be here on Friday, November 9, 2007 at 9:45am. in

GRAC.

MAUI COMMUNITY COLLEGE - A representative form Maui Comm. College will be doing a presentation in GRAC on Wednesday, November 14, at 12:30pm. MCC offers a broad range of Liberal Arts courses that lead to BAdegree programs.

ELKS NATIONAL FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP  

Senior Scholarship opportunity - The Elks National Foundation of the Benevolent & Protective Order of the Elks of the USA is offering the 2008 "Most Valuable Student" scholarship nationwide to high school seniors who are pursuing a 4 year degree on a full-time basis in a college/university in the USA.  Winners will receive 4 year awards ranging from $4,000 - $60,000.  Applicants must be citizens of the US and will be judged on financial need, leadership and scholarship.  Completed applications must be received at the Hilo Elks Lodge on or before January 11, 2008.  They can be mailed or dropped off at 150 Kinoole Street, Hilo, HI.  Applications will then advance through local, district and state competitions to reach the national competition.  For the application, go to www.elks.org/enf/scholars/mvs.cfm or go to GRAC. - H. BURGER KING SCHOLARS PROGRAM

Senior scholarship opportunity!  The 2008 Burger King Scholars Program is offering a $1,000 scholarship.  Applicants must be high school seniors who: maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher, work part-time an average of 15 hrs per week, 40 weeks per year, actively involved in community service activities, demonstrate financial need and plan to enroll in an accredited 2 or 4 year college, university or vocational/technical school by the Fall of the application year.  Log on today at www.bk.com/scholars to apply.  Last day to submit applications is by postmark deadline, February 15, 2008. - H. MENSA EDUCATION AND RESEARCH FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIPS

Senior scholarship opportunity!  Awards are made on the basis of an essay of no more than 550 words that describe the applicant's career, vocation, or academic goals.  It is not necessary that the applicant be a member of Mensa.  The only eligibility requirement are that the applicant be enrolled, for the academic year following the award, in a degree program in an accredited US institution of post-secondary education and that the applicant be currently residing in the area of a participating local group of American Mensa.  Go to www.mensafoundation.org/scholarships to print the official entry forms.  All entries must be postmarked on or before January 15, 2008. - H. PUERTO RICAN HERITAGE SOCIETY OF HAWAII SCHOLARSHIP

Senior scholarship opportunity!  This Society offers up to two annual scholarships of $500 each to outstanding students who will be enrolled full-time at an accredited 4 year university in Hawaii for the 2008 - 2009 academic year.  All applicants must be Hawaii residents and must be a graduating senior with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher.  The principal bases for consideration for this award are:  academic achievement and scholastic ability, character and motivation and financial need.  For more information or for the scholarship application, go to GRAC.  Deadline is February 1, 2008. - H. C/O 2009 HOMECOMING PARADE PARTICIPANTS

The Homecoming competitions are not over yet!  There's still the parade competition.  So far there are only a sad TWELVE juniors who have turned in their permission forms to march in Friday's parade.  You MUST have a permission form in to Mrs. Ray in Q202 to march in the parade.  Please pick them up from Q202 or from Tessie Switzer and turn them in this week, or bye bye competition. - C. CAREER & COLLEGE FAIR

Attention all Sophomores, Juniors & Seniors !!

The 2007 College & Career Fair is coming !!  It will be held at the Hilo Betsuin Sangha Hall on Thursday, November 15, 2007.

Come and sign up in GRAC (Port. 12) Bus fare is $2.50 and we will be leaving promptly at 9:45am and returning to campus

CSS/FINANCIAL AID PROFILE STUDENT GUIDES

Seniors!  The College board has sent the 2008-2009 CSS/Financial Aid Profile Student Guides.  The pricing has changed and the cost of the initial application, including the first school report is $25.  The fee for subsequent school reports is $16.  Some Colleges/Universities and scholarship programs request students to complete this application.  For more information or to pick up this Student Guide, go to GRAC.  Thank you! - H. HOMECOMING T-SHIRTS:

Get your Homecoming t-shirt in E-103 during morning and lunch recesses and wear it this Friday.  Cost is $10 for YL - XL, and $12 for XXL and XXXL.   - D. Tanabe

FRESHMAN CLASS T-SHIRTS:

Class of 2011 t-shirts are still available in E-103.  Cost is $11 for medium - XL.  We'll be using it again, so get yours now! - D. Tanabe

HOMECOMING PARADE:

Calling the entire Waiakea High School ohana...please participate in this Friday's Homecoming Parade at 3:30 p.m. at the Kawamoto Swim Stadium.  Show your school spirit and Warrior pride! - D. Tanabe

SENIORS WITH NOVEMBER 1ST ADMISSION DEADLINES!

Seniors!  Keep in mind that November 1st is next week Thursday.  If you have not submitted your Secondary School Report form to Mrs. Tagawa, IT IS VERY LATE!!  Mrs. Tagawa will not accept requests to complete these forms or write letters of recommendation next week.   - H. Tagawa

ASVAB TESTING

Sophomores, Juniors & Seniors ! There will be another ASVAB test coming up on November 8th, 2007 in the

WHS Library starting at 8:15am - 12:00pm. (Pds. 1, 2 &4) All those seniors that missed the 1st test in October, can sign up again

in GRAC (Port. 12). This ASVAB Test will be testing the JUNIORS with the last names  beginning from  A - K . The

remaining alpha's will be tested in January. For more information, come to GRAC. - N. Okinaka

FREE COLLEGE PLANNING WORKSHOP

First Hawaiian Bank's college planning workshop will be held on Tuesday, November 13 from 6:00-7:30 pm at WHS Cafeteria.  It is recommended for all students in grades 9-12 and their parents. - P. Yanagisawa

 

MEETINGS

JAPANESE -AMERICAN FRIENDSHIP SOCIETY

There will be a short meeting on Thursday Oct. 25, during lunch recess. at 12:10.  Please be able to turn in any drawings for new T-shirt design as soon as possible.  Voting will take place next week during recess.   - L. Otsubo

FUTURE EDUCATORS

WAIAKEA WRITERS GROUP
