SENIOR SCHOLARSHIPS

FUKUNAGA SCHOLARSHIP FOUNDATION:  students who want to pursue studies in business administration at an accredited 4 year college.  Scholarship value is $2,500 per year.  Applications avaialable at GRAC.  Deadline: February 15, 2004.

COMMITMENT TO AGRICULTURE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM:  for 100 high school seniors who come from a farm family and plan to pursue a career in agriculture.  Applications available in GRAC or at www.Monsanto.com or www.NAFB.com.  Deadline:  February 15, 2004.  - T. Kawada

SENIOR SCHOLARSHIPS

ZONTA CLUB OF HILO: open to female seniors with evidence of leadership, community service and dedicated to the advancement of the status of women.  Requires several essays and two letters of recommendation.  Deadline:  February 20, 2004.  Come to GRAC for more information. - T. Kawada

MORE SENIOR SCHOLARSHIPS

HAWAII PACIFIC UNIVERSITY SPIRIT SCHOLARSHIP: for students planning to attend HPU.  Requirements include minimum GPA of 2.5 and outstanding extracurricular involvement in high school.  Value:  50% Tuition waiver.  Application available in GRAC.  Deadline:  February 16th.

HAWAII PACIFIC UNIVERSITY PRESIDENTIAL SCHOLARSHIP:  for students planning to attend HPU.  Requirements include minimum GPA of 3.5 and SAT combined score of 1100 or ACT score of 24.  Application available in GRAC.  Deadline:  February 16th.

AMERICAN SOCIETY OF MILITARY COMPTROLLERS (ASMC-Aloha Chapter): for students entering a field of study directly related to financial/resource management.  Two letters of recommendation required.  Value: one $1,000 & two $500 scholarships. Applications available in GRAC.  Deadline: received by February 27th.

NATIVE HAWAIIAN LEADERSHIP PROJECT:  for Hawaiian students who intend to enroll in an accredited 2 or 4 year college. FAFSA and minimum GPA of 3.2 required.  Application forms available in GRAC.  Deadline:  March 1st.

HAHPERD-THE HAWAII ASSOCIATION FOR HEALTH, PHYSICAL EDUCATION, RECREATION & DANCE: for students interested in pursuing a career in teaching health education, physical education, dance or recreation leadership.  Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and two letters of recommendation.  Applications available in GRAC.  Deadline:  March 1st. - T. SENIOR CAP AND GOWN ORDERS

As of February 1st a late fee of $10 will be added to all cap & gown orders making the total fee $43.  If you have not yet ordered your cap and gown, but plan to participate in the graduation ceremony, please do so before Feb. 1st.  Order forms are available from Ms. Kruse in B-203.  Mahalo. - J. WAIAKEA SFF STUDENT CREDIT UNION OPENING!

The Waiakea SFF Student Credit Union has officially opened and we are open during lunch recess, so stop by, pick up an application form, OR drop off your completed form with parent signature, parent/student photocopy of ID (if you don't have a driver's license or state ID, birth certificate and social security card must be photocopied) and OPEN AN ACCOUNT TODAY!  If you open an account anytime from the 20th to the 30th, you will be eligible for our GRAND PRIZE DRAWING for 2 Round Trip Interisland Tickets and 6 $25 Prince Kuhio Gift Certificates.  Grand prize winners will be announced on Friday, January 30th, on the OFFICIAL GRAND OPENING of our credit union.  Must be present to win.  - S. AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY AWARENESS WEEK:

Start collecting your loose change for our 2nd Annual ACS Awareness Week to be held Jan. 26 thru 30.  For a small donation, ACS pledge cards will be used to decorate the quad.  Bring quarters to decorate the Relay for Life design,  to donate to teachers and staff as they "Stride for a Cure" on Weds., to buy healthy snacks on Thurs. and/or to "Wish for a Cure" by dropping spare change in the wishing well on Friday.   - D. SENIOR T-SHIRTS

Seniors, it's time to order your class t-shirt.  E-103 morning and lunch recess from Jan. 21-Jan. 30.  Cost is $12.00 S-XL and $13.00 XXL or larger.  For your name to be printed on the shirt, you must have paid your dues and filled out the publication consent form.  Check the list at E-103 to see if your name is on and if it is spelled correctly... we will NOT be responsible for any misspelled names. - J. APPLICATIONS FOR GIFTED AND TALENTED ENGLISH CLASSES

UNIVERSAL TECHNICAL INSTITUTE

A representative from Universal Technical Institute will be in Mr. Kiyan's Auto Shop on Thursday, January 22nd during pds. 2 & 4 and on Friday, January 23rd during pds. 1, 3 & 5.  Seniors interested in automotive technology, diesel & industrial technology, marine & motorcycle technology should drop by for more information. - T. WAIAKEA'S ANNUAL SHAKESPEARE COMPETITION

Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors!  Sign up to participate in the Shakespeare Competition with your English teacher or Mr. Barnes in M102 on Feb 4, 2004.   Prepare a memorized monologue from a Shakespearean play of about  15 lines.  The winner will go Honolulu on Feb. 28, 2004 to represent the school in the state-wide competition. - D. KIWIN'S SIGN-UPS

We are still looking for a couple of volunteers to help out with Math League - Sat. Jan. 31 at HCC from 9:00 to 12:00 or so.  Also, please come in during morning and or lunch recesses this week to work on Cancer Awareness Ribbons.  Thumbs-Up, Thumbs Down Movie Review Training is Jan. 23 from 3:00-4:00.  Lastly, there will be a beach clean-up this Sunday from 12:00-2:00 at Richardson's Park.  Thanks!  - C. ENGLISH GIFTED AND TALENTED SCREENING:

If you are currently enrolled in a GT English class, you need not  reapply for the next year's GT class;  however, you must have your G/T teacher sign your Registration Form.  MANDATORY TESTING FOR ALL NEW G/T ENGLISH CANDIDATES WILL BE CONDUCTED ON JANUARY  27TH AT 3 P.M. KEY CLUB PENNY WAR

Thank you to everyone who made a contribution to our Penny War last month.  The final results were Seniors negative 1689 pts; Freshmen negative 689 pts; Juniors negative 168 pts; and the winners of a new camera for their class council - the Sophomores with positive 3815 pts.  We received a total of $169.09 that will be donated to the victims of the San Diego Wildfires last fall.  Unfortunately, some inconsiderate individuals actually took some money out of the bottles before the end of the Penny War - if you know anything about this see Mrs. Sato (Q201) or leave an anonymous note in her box. - K.
