Waiakea High School prepares and empowers the whole student with 21st century skills for success.  Through Social Studies education students are encouraged to become active and responsible citizens of the community, nation, and the world.

To prepare for citizenship, Social Studies courses help students develop the ability to make informed and reasoned decisions for the public good as participants in a culturally diverse democratic society in an interdependent world.

The Social Studies content Standards in History, Civics, Geography, and Economics are addressed in the Waiakea High School required courses and with different emphasis in the elective courses according to College and Career Academies.

There are five strands that drive the Social Studies curriculum:

1.  Historical Understanding

  • Historical content

2.  Political Science/Civics

  • Governance, Democracy, and Interaction

3.  Geography

  • World in Spatial Terms

4.  Economics

  • Resources, Markets

5.  Cultural Anthropology

  • Systems, Dynamics, and Inquiry
